Smiling Faces and Disco Balls!
Instead of words, I wanted to start this blog with a digital symbol all us 21st centurions know very well. Electric Daisy Carnival 2012 presented by Insomniac can be best summed up by not words, but just one symbol. The smiley face
From the moment I landed in Vegas, it was evident who my friends were. Of course it was those I came with. But I’m talkin’ about my extended friends. My fellow EDC-ers who didn’t quite fit the mold. Some were subtle and some were living out loud letting everyone know they were here to celebrate life. The energy was intoxicating as you could definitely FEEL the positive energy in the air as you exchanged glances, smiles and maybe even a “high 5’ with a total stranger because we are all connected on a deeper level most don’t understand.
As you fought through the traffic (if you didn’t plan ahead like me and arrive early…festival rule #1) and finally turned onto Las Vegas Blvd heading toward the speedway in the distance, the energy was enormous; warm like your favorite fluffy blanket on cold night. It’s

as though there was a giant black hole sucking you in where resistance is futile. However, this “black hole” was not like those in space: This was one of bright neon colors that radiated so much positive energy you’d be a fool not to submit to its force. The energy almost seemed to have a slight, quiet subliminal voice saying “welcome friends, come in and celebrate life”.
Upon entering the festival, the diversity of the party people was a breath of fresh air
compared to the scene the night before in the club. Instead of a dress codes, designer
clothes and everyone trying to impress each other (and trying way to hard I might add)
this was an incredible display of creative individuality expressed through fashion. The
costumes and outfits were all one of a kind because we ALL wanted to express our own
individuality. The thought going into people’s outfits was not if it would fit in with
ANY crowd, but if it would make that person happy. Judging by the ocean of smiles
surrounding me like a surfer catching a bad-ass tube, I’d say that goal of self fulfillment
was accomplished.

Kinetic Field is fully EDM energy!
The sights, smells and sounds that tantalized the senses were ALMOST what you would expect at a traditional carnival. The blinking lights of the tilt-a-whirl and Ferris wheels, the yummy goodness of elephant ears and cotton candy …..but…there was something a little unique about this carnival in the desert. There was an ever present beat in the background calling out to you, begging you to come closer, asking you to let go of all your inhibitions. Depending on where you were on the festival grounds, the beat may have differed, but its subliminal message was the same. Come to me friend and celebrate life….Dance I say!” This carnival, the EDC, had an extra hidden bonus that
most don’t….Electronic Dance Music! With names like Kinetic Field and Cosmic
Meadow to name a few, the stages were living entities in and of themselves, each with
their own unique energy that was there for the taking to fill up your “personal energy
tank” with 94 octane EDM. Whether you were there to see the big name headliners or
the obscure new musician on a side stage, ALL the music at EDC was fantastically
amazing and kept all 100,000+ ravers dancing, smiling and celebrating life dusk till’ dawn
until the final beat dropped Monday morning at sunrise! We are the warriors of change
my friends. Case and point: Saturday nite at EDC, instead of riotsand pissed off concert goers for the event stopping….. I saw drums circles withhomemade drums, people singing and dancing and SMILING. Instead of people ditching
in lines, I saw people letting folks in front of them with a smile. It didn’t matter if u were
there for the hard UK Drum n Bass or David Guetta pop…. The goal wad the same:
celebrate life through music! You see, its our culture people are attracted to.. the music
is just medium. We are the warriors of change, my friends.
I can’t help but remember a subliminal visual that pulsated on the Cosmic Meadow stage
Sunday night…”Las Vegas Revolution Recruits.” Usually the word revolution invokes
negative feelings of fear, violence and anarchy. In most circles outside the magical world
of EDM and rave culture, that probably holds true. For my fellow 100,000+ friends in
attendance at EDC Vegas, that message evokes very different emotions. My translation
of the revolution is one of peace, celebration and acceptance through music. EDC is
more than just a concert. It’s more than just a rave. It’s more than just a fashion show
of amazing creativity. It’s the growing consciousness of evolved humans from all over
the world coming together to celebrate life in perfect harmony for one weekend. No
judgments. No boundaries. No anger. Only total freedom of self expression through
fashion, music and dance to escape the stresses of everyday life to “fit in” and “be
normal” by society’s standards. We are the warriors of change my friends.
You see, it is very hard to put into words this amazing 3 day full-sensory cultural
experience that now happens every year in June at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. (As

well as NYC and Puerto Rico) There is a saying we live by here at Neon Nancy to LIVE OUT LOUD. That’s exactly what over 100,000 party people did during the Electric
Daisy Carnival Vegas 2012.
BIG props to the entire crew at Insomniac for making this incredible experience a reality
to us all. As the billboard said: “Insomniac Loves You”, well we love you too!
I’m going to end this blog the same way I stared it and the same way I spent my whole
weekend at EDC Vegas …….
