“Dance I Say”

Welcome to the bold new world of Neon Nancy:
Retro meets techno, vintage meets electro.

With this inaugural blog, I am are here to define our lifestyle, our world, our scene.  I must take on the difficult task of describing in words the vivacious, live out loud world of EDM.  If you find yourself scratching your head asking “what is EDM”…..again welcome……to the world of Electronic Dance Music! If you’re a seasoned veteran, thanks for stayin’ home with us and keeping the scene alive!

For you newbies to this incredibly intoxicating scene (wait a minute people, I’m not talking about drugs and alcohol…stay with me)!  I challenge you to exercise your brain and think creatively outside the box with the word ‘intoxicating.  There are many “things” that can intoxicate you.  The vision of a beautiful woman, a melodic catchy sound, a yummy smell, the touch of satin and lace… you get the picture.  Intoxication is ultimately the feeling when a stimulus pumps that wonderful chemical dopamine through your veins and makes you happy… makes you feel good… makes you fall in love.  That love is the same feeling you get when you first decide to explore the “taboo” world of EDM and attend your first show.

It’s sensory overload the moment you walk through the door…the sights, the sounds, the smells and all the amazing outfits that you want to reach out and touch!  But something grabs your attention… the beat is calling out to you.  The positive energy smothering you is almost indescribable, like a scary black hole in the deep dark depths of space where resistance is futile.  As you walk further down that dark hallway obeying the intoxicating call of the beat, darkness gives way to light as you step into the club and it feels like home.  The beat is still beckoning you to come closer and you can’t resist.  You can now see and feel that energy as the lasers and strobe lights surround you and swallow you from head to toe.  That ever present bass line keeps on calling your name, almost as if to say “hi friend” as it penetrates your entire being and grabs hold of your soul, and you know it’s never going to let go.  You find yourself bobbing your head, tapping your feet to that hypnotic, dirty, sexy bass line that speaks to all 5 senses and screams…. “DANCE I SAY!  EXPRESS YOURSELF! LOSE YOURSELF IN ME!  I WILL NEVER LEAD YOU WRONG.  I WILL ALWAYS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD AND UPLIFT YOUR SPIRITS WHEN YOU ARE DOWN.  I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU IF YOU LET ME IN.” Without hesitation you immediately let down all your inhibitions and fears. When love is real you know it…you FEEL it.  You are no longer afraid of opening your heart and offering your soul to that love.  In that moment of Intoxication, you fall in love with the beat.  You fall in love with Electronic Dance Music.

Welcome to our bold new world.  Live out loud with us.  Don’t be afraid of radical self expression.  Let the music be your guide and our fashion define your life.  Welcome to the world of Neon Nancy.

WMC Here We Come!

So, spring is in the air and it’s that time of year again.  I’m not talking about allergy season or time for the annual ‘spring cleaning’ (or at least not in my little corner of the world).  And no, I’m not talking about spring break either.  Now sure, there will be tons of spring breakers partying their faces off in the coming weeks, blowing off some steam after finals.   I’m talking about something far more meaningful to a select group of old timers like me.  I’m talking about the annual pilgrimage that thousands of people from around the globe make to southern Florida this time of year.  I’m talking about a two week long celebration of some of the best music on the planet.   I’m talking about a week where all the fashions are so vibrant and unique that it just makes you either smile… or get turned on.  I’m talking about the WMC: The Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida!

With this essay I want to put some perspective on this incredible gathering of artists, DJ’s, record label reps (A&R), producers, promoters, EDM culture radio & media, music fans, fashionistas and party goers looking to indulge in our guilty pleasure of bangin’ EDM beats in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

So I had to do a little research myself to truly understand the scope of this amazing week.   The first WMC was held 27 years ago in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Mr. Bill Kelly and Louis Possenti (BIG thanks fellas) are the founding fathers and still maintain control today.  According to the official WMC website, the first conference hosted 90 delegates.  Well, if anyone has attended this event the past few years, you know it has evolved into something much larger, with an estimated 45,000 people making the pilgrimage to Miami from every corner of our amazing planet.  As the core of the Winter Music Conference still centers around a conference that includes seminars, workshops, networking events and panels geared toward industry professionals, there is a whole new aspect that has evolved

Relive Ultra Music Festival 2012!

over the years geared toward EDM fans.  With events like the International Dance Music Awards, Ultra Music Festival and an estimated 500+ events at all the incredible venues Miami has to offer, EDM fans get an opportunity to listen to all the newest beats being dropped by their favorite artists, see some of the hottest new fashion trends and express themselves through clothing, dance and celebration.

Neon Nancy and crew will be down in sunny south Florida for this conference and will be going to as many amazing EDM shows as humanly possible.  We will be catching shows by Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Bob Sinclar and many more.  We hope to be observing our fellow party goers fashion choices as well as show a few people our bright and bold styles at pool parties and clubs such as the Surfcomber Shelborune Fountainebleu and definitely can’t forget our favorite club, Space!  Our laser and black light reactive light up clothing is sure to be a hit among our fellow EDM fans bringing a neon spin to any party we go to.

Whether you are old or young (which I know is a just a state of mind, but that’s for another blog), a freshman new to the EDM scene or a seasoned varsity player, fashionista or music lover the like, Winter Music Conference is a “once in a lifetime” experience that you can amazingly re-experience for the first time every single spring in Miami, Florida USA.

The crew here at Neon Nancy would like to send out a HUGE thanks to all the people who continue to work hard every year to continue to make the Winter Music Conference week a huge success and give new companies like ours a chance to show the world our talents and celebrate life!

EDC – LIVE OUT LOUD

Smiling Faces and Disco Balls!

Instead of words, I wanted to start this blog with a digital symbol all us 21st centurions know very well. Electric Daisy Carnival 2012 presented by Insomniac can be best summed up by not words, but just one symbol. The smiley face :-)

From the moment I landed in Vegas, it was evident who my friends were. Of course it was those I came with. But I’m talkin’ about my extended friends. My fellow EDC-ers who didn’t quite fit the mold. Some were subtle and some were living out loud letting everyone know they were here to celebrate life. The energy was intoxicating as you could definitely FEEL the positive energy in the air as you exchanged glances, smiles and maybe even a “high 5’ with a total stranger because we are all connected on a deeper level most don’t understand.

As you fought through the traffic (if you didn’t plan ahead like me and arrive early…festival rule #1) and finally turned onto Las Vegas Blvd heading toward the speedway in the distance, the energy was enormous; warm like your favorite fluffy blanket on cold night. It’s

as though there was a giant black hole sucking you in where resistance is futile. However, this “black hole” was not like those in space: This was one of bright neon colors that radiated so much positive energy you’d be a fool not to submit to its force. The energy almost seemed to have a slight, quiet subliminal voice saying “welcome friends, come in and celebrate life”.

Upon entering the festival, the diversity of the party people was a breath of fresh air
compared to the scene the night before in the club. Instead of a dress codes, designer
clothes and everyone trying to impress each other (and trying way to hard I might add)
this was an incredible display of creative individuality expressed through fashion. The
costumes and outfits were all one of a kind because we ALL wanted to express our own
individuality. The thought going into people’s outfits was not if it would fit in with
ANY crowd, but if it would make that person happy. Judging by the ocean of smiles
surrounding me like a surfer catching a bad-ass tube, I’d say that goal of self fulfillment
was accomplished.

Kinetic Field is fully EDM energy!

The sights, smells and sounds that tantalized the senses were ALMOST what you would expect at a traditional carnival. The blinking lights of the tilt-a-whirl and Ferris wheels, the yummy goodness of elephant ears and cotton candy …..but…there was something a little unique about this carnival in the desert. There was an ever present beat in the background calling out to you, begging you to come closer, asking you to let go of all your inhibitions. Depending on where you were on the festival grounds, the beat may have differed, but its subliminal message was the same. Come to me friend and celebrate life….Dance I say!” This carnival, the EDC, had an extra hidden bonus that
most don’t….Electronic Dance Music! With names like Kinetic Field and Cosmic
Meadow
to name a few, the stages were living entities in and of themselves, each with
their own unique energy that was there for the taking to fill up your “personal energy
tank” with 94 octane EDM. Whether you were there to see the big name headliners or
the obscure new musician on a side stage, ALL the music at EDC was fantastically
amazing and kept all 100,000+ ravers dancing, smiling and celebrating life dusk till’ dawn
until the final beat dropped Monday morning at sunrise! We are the warriors of change
my friends. Case and point: Saturday nite at EDC, instead of riotsand pissed off concert goers for the event stopping….. I saw drums circles withhomemade drums, people singing and dancing and SMILING. Instead of people ditching
in lines, I saw people letting folks in front of them with a smile. It didn’t matter if u were
there for the hard UK Drum n Bass or David Guetta pop…. The goal wad the same:
celebrate life through music! You see, its our culture people are attracted to.. the music
is just medium. We are the warriors of change, my friends.

I can’t help but remember a subliminal visual that pulsated on the Cosmic Meadow stage
Sunday night…”Las Vegas Revolution Recruits.” Usually the word revolution invokes
negative feelings of fear, violence and anarchy. In most circles outside the magical world
of EDM and rave culture, that probably holds true. For my fellow 100,000+ friends in
attendance at EDC Vegas, that message evokes very different emotions. My translation
of the revolution is one of peace, celebration and acceptance through music. EDC is
more than just a concert. It’s more than just a rave. It’s more than just a fashion show
of amazing creativity. It’s the growing consciousness of evolved humans from all over
the world coming together to celebrate life in perfect harmony for one weekend. No
judgments. No boundaries. No anger. Only total freedom of self expression through
fashion, music and dance to escape the stresses of everyday life to “fit in” and “be
normal” by society’s standards. We are the warriors of change my friends.

You see, it is very hard to put into words this amazing 3 day full-sensory cultural
experience that now happens every year in June at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. (As

well as NYC and Puerto Rico) There is a saying we live by here at Neon Nancy to LIVE OUT LOUD. That’s exactly what over 100,000 party people did during the Electric
Daisy Carnival Vegas 2012
.

BIG props to the entire crew at Insomniac for making this incredible experience a reality
to us all. As the billboard said: “Insomniac Loves You”, well we love you too!

I’m going to end this blog the same way I stared it and the same way I spent my whole
weekend at EDC Vegas ……. :-)
